Don Waters, of St. Louis, MO, who grew up in Van Nuys in the 1950s, sent me these vintage photos of our area. They were shot by his grandfather during the Great Depression of the 1930s. Among the hardships endured at that time were flooding and low agricultural prices.

  1. Sadly, the regular flooding of the L.A. river along with massive population growth is what made the city, with the Army Corps of Engineers, enclose the L.A. River in cement.
